Area 51

ABOUT THIS EPISODE

The intense secrecy surrounding the base has made it the frequent subject of conspiracy theories and a central component of unidentified flying object (UFO) folklore. It has never been declared a secret base, but all research and occurrences in Area 51 are Top Secret/Sensitive Compartmented Information (TS/SCI). The CIA publicly acknowledged the base's existence on June 25, 2013, following a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request filed in 2005, and declassified documents detailing its history and purpose. The intense secrecy surrounding the base has made it the frequent subject of conspiracy theories and as central component unidentified flying object folklore. It is never been cleared a secret base, but all research and occurrences an area fifty one or top secret, sensitive compartmented information. The CIA publically a knowledge the base existence on June twenty two thousand and...

...thirteen, following a freedom of Information Act request filed in two thousand and five and D class find documents detailing its history and purpose. The original rectangular base of six by ten miles is now part of the socalled groom box, Rectangular Area Measuring Twenty Three by twenty five miles of restricted airspace. The area is connected to the Internal Nevada test site road network, I should say, with paved roads leading sound to mercury and West to Yuca flat. Leading northeast from the lake, the wide and well maintained the groom Lake Road runs through a pass in the jumbled hills. The road formerly led two mines in the groom basin, but has been improved since their closure. Its winding course runs past a security checkpoint, but the restricted area around the base extends farther east. I, after leading the restricted area room lake, road descends eastward to the floor of the Tikaboo Valley, passing the dirt road entrances to several small ranches being before converging with state route three hundred and seventy five, better known as the extraterrestrial highway, south of Rachel. Area. Fifty one shares a border with the UK of flat region of the Nevada test site, the location of thirty nine of the nine hundred twenty eight nuclear test conducted by the US Department of Energy and TS. The Yuk of mountain nuclear waste repository is southwest of Groom Lake. But what is room like? GROOMLAKE is a salt flat in Nevada that was used for running runways. Excuse me, of the NLIS bombing range, test site airport. On the north of the area. Fifty one US Air Force military installation Alla sits at four thousand four hundred nine feet elevation and approximately three point seven miles from north to south three miles from east to...

...west. At its whitest point located within the namesake groom Lake Valley portion of the TEOPA basin. The lake is twenty five miles south of Rachel, Nevada. And now let's go on to the more trigguing topic US government's positions on area fifty one. The US government has provided minimal information regarding the mysterious area fifty one. The area surrounding the lake is permanently off limits to both civilian and normal military air traffic. Security gliances are checked regularly. Cameras and weaponry are not allowed. Even military pilots training in the ANAFR risk disciplinary action if they stray in the exclusionary box or any grooms. Airspace surveilance is supplemented using buried motion sensors. Area Fifty one is a common destination for Janet, a small fleet of passenger aircraft operated on behalf of the Air Force to transport military personnel, primarily from hairy read International Airport. The US Geological Survey Topographic map but for the area, only shows the long disused groom mine. The civil aviation chart published by the Nevada dut shows a large restricted area to find as part of the NILI's restricted airspace. The National Atlas shows the area as lying within analyis air force space. There are higher resolution and newer images available from other satellite imagery providers, including Russian providers and the ICONUS. These show the runway marking space facilities, aircraft and vehicles. On Jean Twenty Five, two thousand and thirteen, CIA release an official history of the Youtube and ox card projects which acknoled these existence of area fifty one. In response to a freedom of air information requests. I Mane in two thousand and five by Jeffrey T...

Ritchelson of George Washington Universities National Security Archive contains numerous references to area fifty one and groom lake, along with a map of the area. And, of course, with all the stuff that's going on in area fifty one, it was the focus of an environmental lawsuit in one thousand nine hundred and ninety four. Five unnamed civilian contractors, in the Widows of Contractors Walter Keza and Robert Frost, sued the Air Force in the US Environmental Protection Agency. They allege that they have been present when large quantities of unknown chemicals had been burned and open pits and trenches that grow ruggers, university biochemists analyze biopsies from the complaints and family high levels of dioxin, that business no friend, and try cloth by lane and their body of fat. The complaints allege that they had sustained skin, liver and respiratory injuries due to the work at groom and that this had contributed to the deaths of frost and Caso. The suit Sawt compensation for the injuries, claiming that the air force had legally handled toxic materials and that the EPA had failed in its duty to enforce the resource conservation and Recovery Act, which governs the handling of dangerous materials. They also sought detailed information about the chemicals, hoping that this would facilitate oftical treatment of survivors. Congressman Lee Hamilton, former chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, told sixty minutes, quote, the Air Force is classifying all information about area fifty one in order to protect themselves from a lawsuit. The president annually issues a determination Canary Continuing the groom exception, which is the only formal recognition that the government has ever given. The Groom Lake is more than simply another part of the Ella's complex.

An unclassified memo on the safe handling of f one hundred and seventeen nine hawk material was posted on an air force website in two thousand and five. This discussed the saying materials for which the compliants had requested information which the government had claimed was classified. The memo was removed shortly after journalists became aware of it. In December two thousand and seven, airline pilots notice that the base had appeared in our aircraft navigation systems latest Jepson database revision, with that icee Ao Airport Identifier Code of KPE XTA and enlisted as homey airport. The probable in indvertent release of the airport data led to advice by the aircraft owners and pilots association that student pilots should be explicitly warned about Kxta not to consider it as a waypoint or destination for any flight, even though it now appears in public amend of navigation databases. Let's talk about a little bit about the security of area fifty one, showing at least what we know. The perimeter of the base is marked out by orange posts and patrolled by guards and like pickup trucks and camouflage fatigues. The guards are popularly referred to as Camo dudes by enthusiasts. The guards will not answer questions about their employers. However, according to the New York Daily News, there are indications they are employed through a contractors such as AE. Calm signage around the base rumor advises that deadly force is authorized against trespassers. Technology is also heavily used of maintain the border of the base. This includes surveillance cameras and motion detectors. Some of these motion detectors are placed some distance away from the base on pup and client to notify guards of people approaching. Dwayne day published astronauts an area fifty one the sky lab incident in the space review in January two thousand and six. It was based on a memo written one thousand nine hundred and seventy four CIA director William Colby,...

...by an unknown CIA official. The memo reported that astronauts on board Sky Lab had intermitted inadvertently photographed a certain location. There were specific instructions not to do this. It was the only location that had such an instruction. The name of the location was obscured by the context led day to believe that the subject was groom like. They argues that the CIA considered no other spot on earth to be as insitive is groom like. The memo details the beat between federal agencies regarding whether the images should be classified, with department of Defense agencies arguing that they should and Nassa and the State Department arguing that they should not be classified. The memo itself questions and legality of retroactively classifying unclassified images. The memo includes handwritten remarks apparently by directors Central Intelligence. Colby, secretary of State Rust did raise it, said the State Department people felt strongly, but he was inclined to lead the decision. To me, I confess some questions about need to protect since USS are has it from its own stats. What really does it reveal? If exposed, don't we just say classified? US Af work is done there. The declassified documents do not disclose the outcome of discussions regarding the sky lab and imagery. That debate proved a moot as a photograph appeared in the Federal Government's archives of satellite invagery, along with the remaining Skylab photographs, on January twenty eight two thousand and nineteen, an unidentified man drove through a security checkpoint near Mercury, Nevada and an attempt to enter the base. After an eight mile vehicle pursuit by base security, man exited his vehicle carrying a quotes lindrical object and was shot dead by Ns and ands as security officers and sheriff deputies after refusing to obey request to halt. Fortunately,...

...no other injuries were reported. Let's take a look at some of the conspiracies surrounding this base. Area fifty one has become a focus of modern conspiracy theories due to its secretive nature and connections to classify aircraft. Research theories include the storage, examination and reverse engineering of crashed alien spacecraft, including materials supposedly recovered at Roswell, the study of their occupants and the manufacture of aircraft based on alien technology. Meetings are joint undertakings with extraterrestrials, the development of exotic energy weapons for the SDI initiative or other weapon programs, the development of weather control, the development of time travel and telibertation technology, the development of exotic propulsion systems related to the Aurora program activities related to a shadowy one world government or the majestic twelve organization. Many of the hypotheses concern underground facilities at groom or at Papoost Lake, also known as Spor, location eight five miles south, and include claims of our trans continental underground railroad system dissappearing, airstrip nicknamed the Chesshire Air Strip, which briefly appears when water is sprayed onto its camouflage asphalt and engineering based on alien technology. In the mid S, civilian aircraft flew under Twenty Tho of feet, while military aircraft flew up to fortyzero feet. Youtube began flying above sixtyzero feet and there was an increasing number of UFO signing reports. Signing with occurred most often during early evening hours, where airline pilots were flying West saw the youtube silver wings reflect the setting sun, giving the aircraft a fiery appearance. Many sightings reports came to the Air Force Project Blue Book, which investigated UFO sightings through air traffic controllers and letters to the government.

The project checked Youtube and later oxcart flight records to eliminate the majority of UFO reports that it received during the late s and S, although it could not reveal to the letter writers the truth of what they saw. Similarly, veterans of experimental programs such as ox cart and area fifty one agree that their work inadvertently prompted many of the ufo sightings and other rumors. The shape of ox cart was unprecedented, with its wide, disc like fuselage designed to carry vast quantities of few commercial pilots cruising over Noventa dusk look up and see the bottom of ox cart ways by it two thousand plus miles per hour. The aircraft's titanium body moving as fast as a bullet, would reflect the sund rays and a way that can make anyone think of UFO. They believe that the rumors help maintain secrecy over area on s actual operations. The veterans deny the existence of a vast underground railroad system, although many of area s operations did occur underground. And you can't talk about area fifty one without talking about Bob Boblez are. Excuse me. Bob was are claimed in nineteen eighty nine that he had worked at are s sector, for said to be located underground inside the papoose range near a Papoos Lake. He claimed that he was contracted to work with Alien Spacecraft that the government had in its possession. Similarly, the ninety six documentary dreamland, directed by Bruce Burgus, included an interview with a seventy one year old mechanical engineer who claimed to be a former employee in area fifty one during the nineteen s. his claims included that he had worked on a flying disc simulator, which has been based on a disc originating from a crashed extra terrestrial craft and was used to train pilots. He also claimed that worked with an extra terrestrial being named Jay Rod and was described as a telepathic translator. In two thousand and four, Damn Buick, pseudonym of Dan Crane, claimed to have worked on coning alien viruses at area fifty one, also...

...alongside the Alien Name Jay Rod. Scholarly credentials are the subject of much debate, as he was apparently working as a Las Vegas prole officer in nineteen eighty nine, while also earning a PhD and the State University of New York. In June in two thousand and nineteen, more than two million people responding to a joke proposal to storm area fifty one, which appeared in an anonymous facebook post. The event schedule for September twenty two thousand and nineteen was build a store storm area fifty one. They can stop all of us and it attempt to see them. Aliens. Air Force spokesman Lauraick Andrews to the government would discourage anyone from trying to come into the area where we train American our forces to music festivals in real or Novada were subsequently organized to capitalize on the popularity of the original facebook event. Between one five hundred and three thousand people showed up at the festivals, while over a hundred fifty people who made the journey over several miles to get near the gates to area fifty one. Seven people were reportedly arrested at the event. Is it a conspiracy or not? Leave me some comments in the comment section below or send us a tweet at CETC. podcast one and let's discuss it.
